Marjorie Rahima Hohlstein, piano

Marjorie Hohlstein started playing the piano at age 6 and teaching at age 15. "I started teaching piano because I wanted to share the joy of music, and help build student’s self-esteem the way playing the piano did for me." Her love of music, and the comfort she found in it inspired Hohlstein to make it her career.

Marjorie Hohlstein received her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance, with a minor in Music Theory from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She has a Master’s of Music from The Boston Conservatory, and a Bachelor’s of Music from State University of New York at Fredonia. Dr. Hohlstein has been teaching music for over 30 years. Her piano students have ranged in age from 6 - 80 years old. She is also an active performer as a soloist, chamber player, and accompanist.

Marjorie played with the North Carolina Orchestra after winning their concerto competition. She was named as Bernard D. Arbit research fellow at the State University of New York at Albany, where she continued her research into Jewish composer, Joel Engel. Dr. Hohlstein gave lecture recitals on Joel Engel at SUNY Albany, as part of her fellowship, and at numerous College Music Society conventions, including at the national convention in Santa Fe. In addition, she wrote the liner notes for the Musicians of the Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival CD featuring Joel Engel’s music. During her time living in upstate New York, she organized a benefit concert for the Berkshire Immigrant Center, raising over $20,000 for the non-profit group.

She recently moved to Florida from upstate New York, where she taught on the music faculty of The College of Saint Rose, The Berkshire Music School, and Berkshire Community College. While earning her doctorate in Greensboro NC, she worked as an accompanist at St. Joseph’s Catholic church, and taught Music Theory and Class Piano as part of her Teaching Assistantship.
