Léna Cambis, Executive Director (Co-Founder) / violin / viola

A native of Montpellier, France, Léna Cambis has dedicated her life to the violin with a career that seamlessly blends international performance and more than 35 years of distinguished teaching experience.

She began violin at age four and, just two years later, became the youngest student ever admitted to the National Conservatory of Music of Montpellier, where she studied violin, chamber music, voice, and solfège. By age eleven, she had already graduated in solfège, and at seventeen she was awarded the Conservatory’s coveted Gold Medals in both violin and chamber music.

Her studies took her to London’s prestigious Royal College of Music, where she trained under world-renowned pedagogue Dr. Felix Andrievsky. As a student, Léna performed with the Royal String Ensemble, playing regularly for members of the British royal family and at official events. At the age of sixteen, Léna started performing with professional orchestras across Europe, appearing in some of the world’s great concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall, Salle Gaveau, and Opéra Garnier.

Teaching has been a defining part of her journey from the very beginning. At fifteen, Léna held a full-time position at a community music school while also serving as a substitute teacher at the Montpellier Conservatory. Known for her rigorous yet inspiring approach, she quickly became sought after for her ability to prepare students for competitions and auditions, helping them develop not only technical mastery but also the artistry, resilience, and confidence to thrive.

Upon winning a position in the violin section of the Sarasota Orchestra in 2000, Léna moved to Florida and started teaching privately. In 2008, drawing on her formative experiences in France’s Conservatory system, she co-founded the Sarasota Music Conservatory with her husband, violinist Sean O’Neil. Their vision was to bring to Sarasota the same blend of rigor, artistry, and community spirit that had shaped their musical paths.

Since then, SMC has flourished under her leadership, guiding students from their very first lessons through conservatory and university studies. Her students regularly win competitions, succesfully audition for AllState Orchestra, earn scholarships to attend college, and pursue professional careers in music. Léna's reputation for excellence is matched only by her dedication to nurturing each student’s love of music.
